Why should I backup my EPoS?
With people relying on data held electronically more and
more as time goes on, the systems that store this data are
becoming better and better, surpassing their predecessors in
both speed and reliability. Unfortunately, this excellent
reliability can lead people to hold a false sense of
security; believing that they will always be safe from data
loss and that no form of damage will ever happen to them.
There are two kinds of company when it comes to data loss –
those who have lost data, and those that are going to lose
data. In a modern world, it is a requirement by law to take
good care of data, both for data protection act purposes and
also for our kind friends at the HMRC; where “my dog ate it”
will not be tolerated as an excuse for not being able to
provide data on demand.
For a PC based EPoS system, there are many backup solutions
available, varying from CD-Rom to tape and even Zip files
being left on site. All of these have their pitfalls, more
often than not due to user error and the extra task of
having to switch the tape or remember to put a blank CD in
the drive; it’s because of this Hospitality Tills prefer to
provide Online Backup.
What is Online Backup?
Online backup does exactly as the name suggests; your data
is backed up on a daily basis to an online data centre where
it can be retrieved at any point in the future. Unlike tape,
disk or Zip device, there is no user intervention – the
system will back up all the files you need protecting every
night to our data centre using only the internet, you will
then be sent a receipt by email to confirm that this was a
successful process. The system can be programmed to carry
out this backup at any time, and for an average size venue,
once the initial backup has been done this can take a couple
of minutes a day due to the incremental technology only
backing up changes.
Online Backup has been around for a few years now, finding
its place in the market for main stream IT with several
companies trying to grab a piece of the pie. As with all new
technologies, various brands have created a competitive
marketplace which has brought prices down to an all time
low. The undoubted brand leader, Attix5 have proven their
technology across many platforms, and after testing it
ourselves in depth, we are proud to offer this solution to
our EPoS customers.
How secure is my EPoS data?
You may have heard about data from online backup being
stored in nuclear bunkers, guaranteed to survive its owner
in a nuclear holocaust, or data centres on top government
sites accessed only through retina scanning technology;
whilst we believe this level of service has a place in the
market, we don’t use any gimmicks like this to reassure you
of the security of your data. Online backup data is stored
in a secure data centre in the UK on a backup server which
is backed up itself to a second shadow location. This data
is encrypted with the same or higher level security that is
used by your bank to encrypt online banking based on an
encryption algorithm that you chose upon installation.
Together with being accessible by you 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week, we believe that this level of protection is ample
for our SQL clients.
What if it goes wrong?
It doesn’t. After dealing with online backup for the past
three years, knowing the safeguards that are in place,
providing the machine can get access to the internet, your
data is safe. There is no tape to gum up, no CD to scratch,
and the data is always off site, meaning in the upsetting
event that your system is stolen we can have you back up and
running very soon. Further to all of this, in the event that
you need assistance with a retrieval or even simple advice
as to what to select to back up, Hospitality Tills can help
with this too.
How do I try Online Backup for
free?
We are able to offer a free ten day trial of online backup
to our EPoS clients, allowing you to test the software and
see for yourself how easy and reliable the software is.
